Sometimes it is the simple things that make a difference in the backcountry
A hiker was rescued this week in the white mountains of New Hampshire and it reminded me that sometimes it is the simple things that make the difference between being stranded in the woods or making it back to the vehicle.
In this case the hiker failed to bring food or water, but what made the biggest difference was that they did not bring a headlamp. They got caught above treeline after dark and could not continue hiking.
This is what we call the unexpected overnight decision point. When in this situation, a prepared hiker needs to make the decision to either continue hiking or shelter in place.
I have talked to several NH Conservation Officers who are responsible for conducting the rescues in NH and they told me they have had to rescue far too many people simply because they did not bring a headlamp.
So remember: always bring a headlamp and backup batteries, it can be the difference between being stranded in the woods or making it safely back to your vehicle.
