My Wilderness Journey

I have been drawn to the art of being a woodsman for most of my life, since the time I was running around with my coonskin cap, buck skin coat and the Old Betsy Rifle my parents made me. I grew up in the Maryland suburbs and found my wilderness walking and riding bikes in Rock Creek Park with my brother. I read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and was sold on learning to thrive in the woods. As we got into middle school, my brother and I started backpacking in western Maryland and Pennsylvania. It was a good time suffering through our mistakes and miscalculations and we learned a lot together.  I went to college at RPI, where I met my wife. I talked her grandfather into taking me deer and turkey hunting at his place up in Fort Ann, NY. This was the beginning of my hunting career and I have been hooked ever since. We moved to NH after school where the outdoor opportunities are endless. I spent my free time learning the woods of NH and Maine.

As my experience grew, I got my mind set on pursuing my Maine and NH Guide’s Licenses. It pushed me to broaden my understanding of the woods and sharpen my skills in many areas. I had the opportunity with my brother to spend 2 weeks with Tim Smith of Jack Mountain Bushcraft School, learning the nuances of traveling via canoe. We look forward to more opportunities to learn from him and other masters of this craft.

In the fall I work as a hunting guide for Jason and Dustin Parent at Northern New England Outfitters. It is an honor to work with and learn from such experienced and consistently successful hunting guides.

I see myself as an eternal student, the woods have something new to teach you every time you step away from the paved world. My goal is to help teach people the skills needed so that they can confidently pursue their own journeys in the wild.
