How to Overcome Navigation Resistance
As I share info online about how to navigate, I keep running into people who seem to resist the idea that knowing how to use a map and compass is important. Today I am going to try and break down my understanding of where they are coming from and then give some tips for how we can all overcome this resistance.
I've had people tell me things like: “You don’t need a compass, I just use my smart phone” or “I just use colored string to mark my way when leaving the trail.” And I get it, you can get away without knowing how to read a map or use a compass. Especially with the advancement of GPS and smart phone technology. BUT, as great as technology is, it can fail. It can run out of battery, it can break or it could lose signal. A map and compass do not have any of these failure points.
In my opinion being proficient with a map and compass is one of the foundational skills for wilderness travel. I think the problem is, learning this skill can be overwhelming. Let me assure you that every single person is capable of learning to use a compass. To overcome this resistance, first we need to understand the importance of this skill, and second we need to find a resource and commit to learning.
Our online class, The Prepared Hiker System, is a great way to learn these skills but there are also books and other resources out there. Whichever you choose, take the time to learn this valuable skill, so that you are more prepared on your next adventure.
